Conventional imaging studies and PET scan

The PET/CT study is a hybrid imaging modality that combines nuclear medicine and Computed Tomography. It allows for the visualization of functional and anatomical information of different organs and tissues in a single study.

Nowadays, PET/CT has become a fundamental tool for the assessment of countless patients with various pathologies. To carry out the PET/CT, a radiopharmaceutical is injected into the patient (the most commonly used is FDG, a glucose analog). The patient should be in a quiet place with a comfortable temperature and at rest.

The doctor must wait for the medication to disperse throughout the person’s body. Afterwards, the patient must be placed in the PET/CT equipment, from which a tomographic and imaging study is acquired. Subsequently, the obtained information is analyzed. The study requires that the patient have an optimal glucose level; therefore, they must arrive at the study in a solid fasting state and without having exercised in the hours prior to the PET/CT

  • PET/CT (which will prevent their muscles from absorbing a large amount of the radiopharmaceutical).

  • The PET/CT is a study that involves radiation and therefore carries a risk (development of cancer). However, the necessary protocols are followed to ensure that there are no negative side effects.

  • The main benefit of this study is an adequate assessment of the patient, as it combines the advantages of two great fields: the functional aspect with the anatomical aspect of different parts of the human body.

  • The specialists in Radiology are the most qualified to conduct the PET/CT study.
